So far we've explored console launches in general but also the launch of Wii, a system that notably arrived without a Mario title but has nevertheless achieved major sales success. In some cases, however, the absence of a major Mario title has been a source of controversy and debate: various Nintendo systems have launched with the famous mascot, so we've decided to look at the launches of GameCube and 3DS and consider whether the absence of Mario affected the early and long-term success of the … READ MORE

Sony continues to mess up with Android updates. Will the company ever figure it out? Crave investigates the madness, and even finds some light at the end of the tunnel. Sony must stay on top of Android updates for its tablets to remain relevant to consumers. (Credit: Sony) One must wonder why Sony cannot get out of the habit of playing a fragmented and behind-the-curve Android release schedule for its devices. Finally putting speculation to rest, a Sony representative confirmed with Crave today (and subsequently on Twitter) that Sony tablet owners in "all regions will have Android 4.0 by end of May." And on a related note, a Sony Japan statement announced a May 24 drop date for Android 4.0 landing on both Tablet S and Tablet P devices specifically in that country, perhaps a timeframe we … READ MORE

It's that time again: No, not high-school graduation, but Microsoft's buy a PC, get an Xbox offer. Beginning May 20 in the U.S., students who buy a qualifying Windows PC worth $ 699 or more at participating retailers can get a 4GB Xbox 360 console for free, just like last year, Microsoft said. Canadian customers can also pay $ 500 or more for a PC, then get the same console for free as well. Note that students will have to provide student identification before the retailer will honor the offer, so prospective students would be well-advised to check out the offer at the retailer itself. Participating retailers in the U.S. include Best Buy, Dell.com, Fry's Electronics, HPDirect.com, Microsoft Stores, and NewEgg.com. In Canada, they include Best Buy, Dell.ca, Future Shop, Staples, and The … READ MORE
DT Debate: Did the Wii’s casual gaming focus hurt or help Nintendo?

In this week's DT Debates, Staff Writers Ryan Fleming and Jeffrey Van Camp duke it out over whether the Wii was a help or hindrance for Nintendo. The Nintendo Wii has had an interesting relationship with the gaming world. The console made a play for the casual gamer market, deviating from the core industry that Sony and Microsoft were capitalizing on with the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Nintendo President Satoru Iwata recently admitted this may not have been in the company’s best interest, yet Wii sales and excitement over the next iteration remain. Staff Writers Ryan Fleming and Jeffrey Van Camp go head to head debating the merits and pitfalls of this system in this week’s edition of DT Debates, where we ask… I don’t think there is really much of a question. Nintendo made a … READ MORE
